HP5 part 2 - Canon EX EE

Wanting to test my new Canon EX EE, and film stocks low, I stole the roll of HP5 out of the Lord Martian and loaded the Canon…

The EX EE appealed for it’s looks - it differs from the conventional look of the majority of SLR’s from the age. The subtle design aspect where the prism doesn’t flow into the front of the body, just looks nice!

The EX EE was sold between 1969-72 and uses model specific EX lenses that detach in front of the aperture, rather than the whole lens. It is either shutter priority automatic exposure or full manual controls, with the aperture being controlled by the dial around the rewind crank. This small change is actually quite intuitive to use with the aperture value being displayed in the viewfinder.

In addition to the lovely looks, and build quality, the shutter/mirror is so silky smooth - and it feels so nice to shoot with.

The first outing was not that productive, only managing one shot as the light was flat and weather was a bit pants… A composition I have shot many times before on different cameras, but still like it!

The second day was better, the light was slightly brighter, and I do love photographing Camera Shops - unfortunately it wasn’t open so I couldn’t experience ‘The smallest independent Photography Shop in England’! Again not managing many shots whilst wander the streets, and starting to think I had lost my mojo!

I finished the roll over the woods as I often do, there is a choice of local woodlands, and I do love this composition. However the light meter on my new Samsung phone did not get it totally right. When metering, I did not believe it, so increased the exposure a stop to darken the image, but it could have done with another really. The scene is quite dark in reality, and I usually need a tripod to get this shot.

I did intend just to flip the camera after testing, but really enjoyed using it! The shutter sound is so nice, and it was a good shooter. I do not have any ‘old’ Canon’s either, so it fits into the collection nicely with the EOS’s and compacts.

The images from the 50mm EX f1.8 lens are nice and sharp and have a good look to them. What more do you need?

These images are nothing special, but it was just a test of the camera, so next time I will try a bit harder!
