Canon Sure Shot 76 in London…
Shooting a camera with no expectation is liberating - when you have spent a lot of money on a fancy new camera, only to be disappointed is heart-breaking. This Canon Sure Shot 76 was never going to produce portfolio worthy images, but that is not the point of it.
Heading up to London for the day, I would normally take a small selection of cameras to shoot, but on previous trips learnt the lesson that I never use them all. This time I only took the Sure Shot and one roll of Kodak Gold.

The Sure Shot 76 is a fantastic camera at doing what it is made for… small enough to fit in a pocket and simple enough to just grab shots on the move. This image of the two classic cars meeting in traffic is a fleeting moment as the driver’s exchange a glance in appreciation of each others classic German machinery.
Similarly the Police car racing down the road with lights and sirens blaring at the perfect time with no obstructions. I panned with the car to try to blur the background motion - and it worked! No fuss with quickly changing settings, just the knowledge that the camera would not capture the buildings sharply.

As these two gents approached the Porsche, I was hoping for them to admire it as they past, but they didn’t even acknowledge. Such is the number of fancy cars out on a sunny Sunday morning!

One of the dropped pins on Google Maps for the day was Banksy’s new installation in the heart of the city. I do really admire his work. I did take one shot of the lone security guard, but couldn’t get the sculpture in without having a scrapping composition.

Possibly my favourite from the roll is this doorman or sale guy basking in the sunshine, guarding the entrance to the cigar shop on Pall Mall. It really emphasises the point that you don’t need a super sharp lens, or expensive camera to get good candid street shots.

My Canon Sure Shot 76 cost £2 at a car boot sale. The best feature for me is the function dial on the back! That may sound strange, but it also selects the shooting mode - and one of those modes is No Flash! A game changer that you can turn it on straight to flash off without having to find tiny buttons and cycle through settings to turn off. I don’t use flash, and to have it so accessible if fantastic.
I know the image quality is nowhere near a premium camera, but it is easy, quick and fun.
